AMMONITE
The Navajo and other tribes of the North American Plains carried ammonites in their medicine bags for health and good hunting.
Where did they find these ammonites and how did extinct marine animals get to the Great Plains?
We know that the North American continent was once entirely covered with water and during this prehistoric period from 415 to 65 million years ago when they became extinct, ammonites most probably lived in the open water of the ancient seas, rather than at the sea bottom. This is suggested by the fact that their fossils are often found in rocks that were laid down under conditions where no bottom dwelling life is found.
Ammonite fossils are found on every continent and come in every naturally occurring color. Their name comes from their spiral shape as their fossilized shells somewhat resemble tightly coiled rams’ horns. Pliny the Elder (d. 79 A.D. near Pompeii) called fossils of these animals “horns of Ammon” because the Egyptian god Ammon was typically depicted wearing a ram’s horns.
Aside from the fact that ammonites are very cool looking and provide an interesting stone for artifacts and jewelry, an ammonite is believed to be a very strong protective stone, giving stability to your life. It tends to encourage and assist one with survival instincts in that it enhances one’s ability to know what has to be done in order to endure.
Ammonite creates a circular breathing which is very helpful during meditative states. It has been used as an aid in the birthing process as well as a tool to alleviate depressive states that may occur after birth.
An ammonite is a fossil associated with architects and those in the field of construction. It provides for insights from the
onset and allows one to retain the “whole picture” from conception through completion of a project.
Many believe this fossil stone is particularly beneficial to wear or to have during these difficult financial times when uncertainty is all around us in this world in which we live. Certainly, a creature that endured for millions of years and that has now had a rebirth in terms of aesthetic appreciation can reinforce our positive attitudes towards the ability to carry on and surmount whatever toll the ‘gods’ may exact. Their magic continues to emphasize steadiness, firmness and perseverance and will hopefully continue for at least the next million or two years.
At the Center for the New Age, we have a huge selection of Ammonites either by themselves, or incorporated into hand made sterling silver jewelry.

Above are just a few samples of ammonite fossils ranging in price from $33 to $102. The ammonite bracelet set with green amethyst, carrollite, pyrite, quartz and shark’s tooth is priced at $327; the pendants at $134 (center) and $54.
