What is a Huna
by Mary Morningstar
Huna is the name of the ancient healing art of the indigenous people of the Hawaiian Islands, dating back some 35 thousand years. It was kept as a carefully guarded secret; in fact, the name itself is the Hawaiian word for “secret.”
The concept of Huna has survived in an oral tradition to our modern time, but in some ways it has been overpowered, changed and partly destroyed by the influences of religion, power and politics. However, Huna has managed to maintain enough of its fundamental nature to allow for this ancient wisdom to facilitate a balanced life for its devotees.
Huna considers the powers of the mind to be natural and influential in everyone. Huna is based on knowledge of the three levels of consciousness – the Three Selves of Huna - the lower self, middle self and higher self; or unconscious, conscious and super-conscious mind in Freudian terms.
The lower self is the unconscious, subconscious self where the emotions and memory reside. It is the part that gathers “Mana,” the life force that is used to create. The lower self depends on the 5 physical senses.
The middle self is the conscious, reasoning rational self. This self is not the seat of memory, but it has imagination and will and instructs the conscience. The middle self is the ordinary, day to day self. It is the part of the self that can do wrong - in Huna terms, willfully cause pain or hurt to a person, another being or to one’s own self.
The higher self is the superconscious or the God self or soul. The higher self brings all desired things into reality. It has intuitive knowledge of the past, present and the fixed part of the future and future possibilities. The higher self communicates with the Higher powers and other high selves.
It is obligatory that the three parts work together in harmony. They must be strongly connected and able to communicate with each other. The Huna way of life teaches that the key to living a fulfilled life lies in the awakening and integration of the subconscious, conscious and higher selves. It offers a vision of life centered in love.
In the Hawaiian language, the term “Kahuna” is used for an expert whether it be in diagnosing illness, herbal medicine, wood carving, star-gazing, or discoursing on the wisdom of Huna. A Kahuna teaches the student pursuing Huna to balance their three selves to access the power of mind to clear unwanted emotions and mental habits. With clearing, letting go and forgiveness, one is able to connect to the higher self to energize and heal and to absorb higher vibrational energy in order to be at one with the highest universal love and light. To become a strong Kahuna is to create an inner balance that is shifting, rebalancing and rearranging its energies at will to withstand chaos and turbulence in the surrounding world.
Huna is a transformational system that includes meditation and breathing techniques, visualization and dream exercises, chanting, drumming and energy work. Huna chanting and drumming open the heart and help the participant to connect with this ancient wisdom that has magically survived for 35 millennia.
The Center for the New Age has 13 readers and healers who are available for readings or consultations on a daily basis either in person or by phone. Two of them are Kahunas in their own right and can more fully explain and direct you in the practice of Huna.
