Xylitol
A Magical Substance
Xylitor is not a mantra; not an ancient incantation; not even a Feng Shui cure! While the pronunciation might sound esoteric - the “X” is articulated as a “Z” – in actuality, xylitol is the name of a safe, natural sweetener without the bad side effects of sugar and artificial substitutes, that is actually beneficial to the human body.
Xylitol occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables and is even produced by the human body during normal metabolism. Originally synthesized from birch bark in Finland, it is now produced commercially from plants such as birch and other hard wood trees and fibrous vegetation. It has the same sweetness and bulk as sucrose with one-third fewer calories and no unpleasant aftertaste.
While this may be all very nice, it is hardly New Age. Yet, xylitol does have some very specific properties with ‘magical’ overtones, and so it seems appropriate that we share this information in our October newsletter when all of us will be ingesting sweets to the max in honor of Halloween/Samhain.
And in keeping with this holiday lore, how bizarre is this: Xylitol is a tooth-friendly sugar! Eating sugar normally causes tooth decay by creating a highly acidic condition in the mouth. Acidity strips tooth enamel of minerals, causing it to weaken and making it more vulnerable to attack by bacteria, leading to tooth decay. Xylitol, however, actively aids in repairing minor cavities caused by dental decay. It’s got to be magic that xylitol has a plaque-reducing effect and that this sweetener attracts and then starves harmful micro-organisms, allowing the mouth to remineralize damaged teeth. Wow!
Although xylitol tastes and looks exactly like sugar, that is where the similarities end. Xylitol is really sugar’s mirror image. While sugar wreaks havoc on the body, xylitol heals and repairs. It also builds immunity, protects against chronic degenerative disease and has anti-aging benefits. While sugar is acid forming, xylitol is alkaline enhancing. Absorbed more slowly than sugar, it doesn’t contribute to high blood sugar levels or the resulting hyperglycemia caused by insufficient insulin response. And it can be used in the same proportions as sugar in recipes to provide good tasting – healthful – treats for Halloween or other times.
Finally, just as cranberries have the ability to slough off germs in the urinary tract, xylitol exhibits this same ability in the ear and upper respiratory tract. The presence of xylitol prevents the growth of bacteria. When bacteria enter the body, they hold on to the tissues by hanging on to a variety of sugar complexes. The nature of xylitol and its ability to form many different sugar-like structures interferes with the ability of harmful bacteria to adhere.
