Elves….Santa’s or Otherwise
In this holiday season, children’s fondest expectations are centered in the persona of Santa Claus whom we all know resides at the North Pole with his faithful helpers, Santa’s elves.
This newsletter is dedicated to these mysterious other worldly intelligences that live and lurk betwixt and between dimensions and are rarely seen by the human eye. These are the “Wee Folk” or the “Old Ones.” We may not be lucky enough to actually see them, but that does not mean they don’t exist.
Stories about elves date back to ancient cultures, the Norse, the English and the German. Could it be that we harbor collective subconscious memories of that era on earth when the “veil” that separates dimensions was thinner and the threshold to fantastic realities was more easily crossed?
As cultural beliefs changed throughout the centuries and as intellectual development and scientific achievement rose to greater importance, there was a tremendous impact on our ability to access – or filter out – many realities that faded further into the background of human awareness. Elves, fairies, nature spirits and encounters with strange creatures and magical beings became remembered only as myth. But myths may very well be not myths at all; rather, fantastic, magical, mystical, thoroughly phenomenal adventures or encounters that are based, although perhaps exaggerated, on fact.
We have four basic electrical brain wave frequency states: beta, alpha, theta and delta. Our brains are operating in the beta state when we’re fully awake and going about our daily routine. It is also the brain wave state where anxiety, worry, tension and stress are produced.
We are in the alpha state when we’re relaxed, reflective, meditative, or just beginning to fall asleep, even when we’re doing repetitive tasks like driving along a familiar road or brushing our teeth.
We are in the theta state when we’re highly creative, deep in day-dreaming, birthing a new idea, having a revelation, deep trance channeling, having a religious/mystical experience or gaining inspired insights.
The delta-state occurs when we are in a deep state of either dreaming or dreamless sleep.
We experience all of these states at different times in various forms. Although we can tap into the highly creative state of theta, the vast majority of folks experience the theta state only briefly while drifting from alpha on the way down into deep sleep delta, and then again upon rising from delta on the way up to alpha and to the full wakefulness of beta.
It is while we are in the theta state where we achieve our fullest potential for high creativity and profound insights as well as spiritual/religious ecstasy, and where we can access other dimensional realities. You might ask, why is such a powerful brain wave state – theta – experienced mostly in the sleep state? Isn’t that a waste of a very good thing?
It hasn’t always been this way. When we were children, until around 6 or 7, the theta state took the larger percentage of our waking state. This fact makes sense in that children are highly creative in their play and imagination. It is during this time that children are likely to have “invisible” playmates or companions. Small children lack the ability to explain or accurately describe their experiences and until they learn the words, children may not be aware that what they see or hear is not visible or audible to others. It is simply a part of their own world; a “hidden” world.
There are special places throughout the world where there appear pockets of energy in which another order of intelligence abides and it is here that elves amongst others, i.e. fairies, gnomes, devas etc., live as “the Hidden People.” These pockets of intelligent energy may be influenced by human intelligence and may therefore manifest in a physical form as a variation of a human image. These are the “Elder Race" or the “Old Ones" referred to in myths and legends. We know them as Elves.
David Spangler of Findhorn claimed that he was told by such an intelligence that they recognize humankind as a necessary and vital part of the synergistic state of earth. This intelligence maintains that they are essentially concerned with human survival because it bears directly upon the survival of Earth. Spangler’s understanding of humankind’s relationship to these entities is that we are ‘first cousins’ and that we somehow have a common ancestor.
It is well accepted fact that the country folk of Ireland take their "Wee People" seriously. The Irish have always understood that certain mounds, caves, creek areas and forest clearing are sacred to the "Hidden Ones" and disturbing the mounds in which the “little people” dwell is to invite severe supernatural consequences.
There is a mound outside the Village of Wexford that was disturbed when workmen began digging a hole for a large light pole. The local villagers warned that the pole would never stay put because the fairies and elves would not put up with the disturbance. Although the workmen laughed and made rude remarks, sure enough, the pole did not stay put.
No matter ho many times the workmen reset the pole – even digging the hole far deeper and wider than necessary – the pole was always tilted askew the next day while all the other light poles remained straight. The foreman of the crew accused the villagers of trickery, but they only shrugged and claimed that the wee folk had done it. Finally, the foreman had enough and ordered the crew to dig a second hole four feet outside of the mound and dropped the pole in there. And there it has stood, untouched, untroubled, exactly where the “wee folk” have permitted it to stand.
Elves’ benign nature has been experienced by those who have won their favor. The Hidden Ones can materialize to help a poor farmer harvest a crop and have it in the bins before a storm hits, or they can clean a kitchen in the twinkling of an eye to erase the stress of an exhausted housewife. If they see fit to do so, the elves can guide their favored humans with their ability to divine the future and they will stand by to assist at the birth of a special couple’s child whom they will tutor and protect throughout the child’s lifetime.
There are others that see the elfin clans as forms assumed by the rebellious angels who were driven out of Heaven during the celestial uprising led by Lucifer. These fallen angels, cast from their heavenly abode, took up new residences in the forests, mountains and lakes of Earth. They exist in a much diminished capacity, but still possess more than enough power to be considered supernatural. Or when we consider the Elves at the North Pole who make toys for thousands of children in the blink of an eye, we know that these Wee Folk, these Old Ones are magical and mystical indeed.
