Mysterious Samhain
Samhain, All Hallows, All Hallow’s Eve, Hallow E’en, Halloween. The most magical night of the year – a night of glowing jack-o’-lanterns, bobbing for apples, tricks or treats, and dressing in costume; ghost stories and séances, tarot card readings and scrying with mirrors; a magical night when the veil that separates our world from the spirit world is weakest.
Samhain (pronounced Sow-in) is the “end of Autumn,” a word that was also used for the first month of the ancient Celtic calendar and in particular referred to the festival marking the beginning of the winter season occurring on November 1st. Celtic days commenced at night so it is understandable that the most magically potent time of this festival should take place on its eve, the night of October 31st.
This is the end of the old year, the beginning of the new, and commemoration of those who died during the past year, and gazing toward the future, are inexorably intertwined in the Samhain holiday. As a feast of the dead, this was the one night when the dead could, if they wished, return to the land of the living to celebrate with their family, tribe or clan (all to return to their appointed places by cockcrow). Perhaps the most famous icon of the modern holiday is the jack-o’-lantern, reminiscent of lanterns used by people who traveled the road on this eve, the scary face to frighten away spirits or faeries who might otherwise lead them astray. Set on porches and in windows, carved jack-o’-lanterns cast the same spell of protection over the household.
Sanhain was also the night for peering into the future. Celtic New Year’s Eve, Sanhain eve, represents a point when the natural order of the universe dissolves back into primordial chaos, preparatory to reestablishing itself in a new order. It is considered a “spirit night” when the mundane laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, and the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Communicating with ancestors and departed loved ones is easy at this time, for as we enter winter, they journey through this world on their way to their Summerlands. And since Samhain is a night that exists outside of time, this special eve may be used to view any other point in time; i.e. the future.
The custom of dressing in costume and ‘trick or treating’ was observed on Sanhain. Originally, the custom was not relegated to children but was actively indulged in by adults as well. The tradition of dressing in costume consisted almost exclusively of cross-dressing (men dressing as women and women as men). It seems as though the ancient society provided an opportunity for people to ‘try on’ the role of the opposite gender for this one night – the one night when ‘rules’ were put aside.
And to celebrate the divination aspects of this holiday, there are rituals.
Before the stroke of midnight, sit in front of a mirror in a room lit
only by one candle or the moon. Go into the silence and ask a
question. Cut an apple into nine pieces. With your back to the mirror,
eat eight of the pieces, then throw the ninth over your left shoulder.
Turn your head to look over the same shoulder, and you will see an
image or symbol in the mirror that will tell you your answer.
(When you look in the mirror, let your focus go “soft” and allow the
patterns made by the moon or candlelight and shadows to suggest
forms, symbols and other dreamlike images that speak to your intuition.)
Here’s another.
Go to a boundary stream and with closed eyes, take from the water three stones between middle finger and thumb saying these words as each is gathered: I will lift the stone for substance, virtue and strength. May this stone be in my hand till I reach my journey’s end.
Carry them home carefully and place them under your pillow. On
Sanhaim eve, ask for a dream that will give you guidance or a solution
to a problem, and the stones will bring it for you.
The medieval church co-opted Samhain’s commemoration of the dead. To the church, however, it could never be a feast for all the dead, but only the blessed dead, all those hallowed (made holy) by obedience to God. It was Pope Boniface who was instrumental in superimposing a Christian festival over the pagan tradition, adopting the festival of the dead to become the festival of saints and martyrs. It took place on May 13, but a century later, Pope Gregory II moved this Christian holiday of “all Hollows Eve” from May 13 to October 31 to coincide with the Feast of Samhain. This was an effort by the Catholic Church to downplay the pagan festival, but as we all know, the pagan festival continues to be celebrated with all ancient beliefs and practices morphed into the magical, mystical holiday we all love….Halloween.
