Gods and Goddesses
Buddhas - Quan-Yin - Tara - Ganesh
The classic Indian gods and goddesses have their origin in the Golden Age, that period of time in the ancient world when trade flourished and new ideas and concepts were transmitted along the path of the spice route.
According to myth, the gods walked freely between the three worlds of existence. As the ages changed and religions took hold, these various deities were worshipped in the form of statuary and idols. Buddha is the exception to this description as he was alive approximately 2500 years ago.
The purpose of these pieces is to remind us that these other worlds exist. The gods/goddesses are often placed on personal altars and serve to provide a sacred environment for the home and office, and as art pieces. The depiction and names of these deities vary from culture to culture. Each deity represents a story or parabel that calls to mind an important lesson.
In Hinduism, there is the trinity of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer and regenerator and their female counterparts - Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati which make up the feminine balance in the creation. Vishnu and Shiva incarnate themselves into other forms, as human, animal or other living beings to help the earth in times of crisis.
